“Yu”, CIID 2015 Open Exhibit Installation
In October 2015 Novofibre joined over 1000 designers and artists at the 2015 China Institute of Interior Design Open Exhibit held in Lanzhou, China. This year’s theme, “Crossing Boundaries”, asked participants to engage with the cultural and environmental landscapes of the historic Lanzhou region. Novofibre collaborated with Artist/Designer Lin Xueming to produce a 3-part OSSB installation inspired by traditional Chinese Tangram puzzles. The work, entitled “Yu”, plays off the Chinese cultural tradition of using puzzles as a means to build interpretation skills and intelligence. Lin Xueming designed the OSSB Tangram shapes to reflect the mountainous landscape of Lanzhou. The “Yu” installation is comprised of 3 parts, totaling 100 square meters in size, and made entirely of Novofibre OSSB panel boards. To date, it is the world’s largest wheat straw board installation.
“Teahouse” is a temporary tea space constructed for the 2015 China Institute for Interior Design (CIID) Open Exhibit in Lanzhou, China. The installation was designed to showcase natural materials used to create aesthetically and technologically modern living spaces. Novofibre panels were used throughout the “Teahouse” for everything from structural elements, to surface treatments and furniture. The visual concept for the installation was based on the CIID’s regional division of “stations”. There are 52 “stations” in China, and Novofibre worked with the design team for “Station 23/23站”. Using “23站” as a visual starting point, Novofibre and the design team worked to design a completely natural environment that celebrates Hebei’s environmental and cultural heritage, while also being fully modern and creative.
